Naturopathic Solutions to Hair Loss | clubmom

It can be very scary when your hair starts falling out in big clumps.

Many women experience hair loss after giving birth. It can also happen during perimenopause or menopause, and commonly occurs during significant stress periods.

With hair loss (or any health concern for that matter), it is important to address the ?root? cause(s) of the problem. Without question, a proper assessment leads to effective treatment.

Consider your head as a garden. In doing so, how nutritive is the soil in which your flowers (or your hair follicles) grow? Let?s explore what may be happening ?underground?.

Root Causes of Hair Loss: ?

  1. Stress ? adrenal imbalance (excess or deficient cortisol production)
  2. Hormone dysregulation (ie. Thyroid, DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone)
  3. Anemia, low iron stores
  4. Depleted body nutrients
  5. Toxic environmental and/or chemical exposure(s)? (including reactions to medications, chlorine, fluoride, mercury)
  6. Inflammation

What tools would a Naturopathic Doctor use to assess the causes of hair loss? ?

  1. Blood work: Iron, Thyroid markers (TSH, fT3, fT4), B12, CRP (inflammation)
  2. Adrenal health status (cortisol)
  3. Hormone panel? (Estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone)
  4. Environmental and chemical exposure testing (ie. Heavy metal testing if relevant to your case)
  5. Diet diary ? what are you eating throughout the week?
  6. IgG food sensitivity testing ? are certain foods having an inflammatory immune reaction in your body? This test is especially useful if you have any skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis)

Once we have determined the problem, you can then begin a treatment plan.? There is significant value in meeting with a Naturopathic Doctor who can take an individualized approach to your complete health profile.? ?

Healthy Hair Tips for Everyone

Nutrition

  1. Reduce your intake of pro-inflammatory foods (saturated fats, dairy products, and other animal products).
  2. Eat more fresh vegetables, whole grains, and healthy proteins.Consume foods high in iron and silica, such as black strap molasses, dark, leafy greens (alfalfa, kale, collard greens, spinach), avocado, cucumber, onions and beets, as well as oats, barley, rice, millet.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (a Component of Naturopathic Medicine)?

In traditional Chinese medicine, hair loss and premature greying is linked to a condition known as ?kidney deficiency?. This does not necessarily mean you have a pathological problem with your kidney. It simply means your kidney function may be overtaxed and needs support. Kidney energy is believed to naturally decline with age, but people with early or accelerated hair loss may have particularly weak kidney energy. You can support kidney energy with:

  1. Botanicals and nutrients that nourish and strengthen the kidney
  2. Acupuncture ? tonifying the kidney meridian
  3. Kidney supportive foods (which coincidentally, are also foods rich in iron and silica listed above. This is yet another reason for you to love KALE!)

Support your Adrenals, Thyroid and Hormone profile with supplements: ? ?

  1. Withania ? one of my favourite healing botanicals, helps to reset the adrenal/thyroid axis and stress response.
  2. Vitamin B5 ? a cofactor involved in the cellular energy pathway.
  3. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) ? has numerous biological benefits, including making collagen.? It is also involved in the building materials of all connective tissues including skin, hair, nails, blood vessels, tendons, joint cartilage and bone.
  4. Zinc ? an important mineral for protein synthesis, antioxidant mechanisms and immune function, which can benefit hair, skin and nails.

Physical Medicine

  1. Stress reduction techniques can increase blood flow to the scalp, such as therapeutic scalp massages
  2. Scalp massage using essential oils of rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme, and cedar wood may be helpful in increasing circulation.
  3. Add 3 to 6 drops of essential oil to 1 tbsp of grapeseed oil and massage into scalp daily.
