Copters pluck families from raging European floods

USTI NAD LABEM, Czech Republic (AP) ? Families in southern Germany scrambled to their rooftops after two levees broke and were being airlifted to safety as raging floodwaters sweep north in a torrent.

Authorities say at least 16 people have died and at least four others are missing in the flooding that has inundated vast tracks of central Europe.

In Deggendorf in southern Germany, the dpa news agency said helicopters started evacuating residents Wednesday after two levees along the Danube and Isar rivers broke and huge masses of water poured into the Bavarian village.

Firefighter Alois Schraufstetter said the water in the town was already 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) high. He says "this is a life-threatening situation."

Schraufstetter said four farmers were rescued at the very last minute by helicopter as the floods submerged their tractor.
