Michele Cardoso, Brazilian Nightclub Fire Victim, Pleaded For Help On Facebook Before She Died

A young woman trapped inside the deadly Brazilian nightclub blaze this weekend posted one final message to Facebook, pleading for help as the building burned.

As Gawker notes, Michele Cardoso, a 20-year-old medical student, was at Boate Kiss on Sunday with her sister and her boyfriend, Jo?o Paulo Pozzobon.

About 50 minutes after the fire began, Cardoso was able to access Facebook one last time.

"Fire at KISS help," she posted to the site.

All three patrons died in the blaze, according to Gawker. Pozzobon's Facebook page still shows his Foursquare check-in at Boate Kiss. Below the post, one user wrote: "The last check-in."

One of Cardoso's friends told Brazil Extra that she had always been a very cheerful person.

More than 230 people were killed in the crowded Santa Maria club after pyrotechnics ignited the soundproof foam.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Dr. Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a professor at the nearby medical school, told the Associated Press.

At least three people have been arrested in connection with the blaze, including the club's co-owner.

Netgear buys Sierra Wireless' AirCard unit, delves deeper into LTE

Sierra Wireless AirCard 76x hotspot

Sierra Wireless will be a very familiar name to many travelers who've depended on a hotspot or modem to keep their laptop online. Let's hope they aren't overly comfortable with the brand: Netgear just snapped up the assets of Sierra Wireless' AirCard business, which covers many of the portable 3G and 4G devices we hold dear. The $138 million, 160-employee deal gives Netgear the resources it wants to make a big push into LTE access devices. Sierra Wireless, meanwhile, is blunt in describing the handover as a cash grab: the agreement gives it "significant financial resources" for improving its embedded modules and machine-to-machine devices. The deal should thus make sense for both sides as long as it completes in March, although we can't help but feel that it's the end of an era for jet set data users.

NETGEAR ENTERS INTO AGREEMENT TO ACQUIRE SELECT ASSETS OF SIERRA WIRELESS AIRCARD BUSINESS

Acquisition accelerates mobile initiative of NETGEAR service provider business and will be immediately accretive to earnings upon closing

SAN JOSE, Calif. - January 28, 2013 - NETGEAR(R), Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses and service providers, today announced that on January 28, 2013, it entered into an agreement to acquire select assets and operations of the Sierra Wireless, Inc. ("Sierra Wireless") AirCard(R) business. NETGEAR management will hold an investor conference call tomorrow, January 29, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. EST (5:30 a.m. PST) to discuss the agreement.

On January 28, 2013, NETGEAR entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement with Sierra Wireless to acquire the operations of the AirCard business, including customer relationships, certain intellectual property, inventory and fixed assets of the Sierra Wireless AirCard business. The purchase price is approximately $138 million in cash. The final purchase price is subject to adjustments to be made after closing. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of necessary regulatory clearances, is expected to close by the end of NETGEAR's fiscal first quarter.

Patrick Lo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NETGEAR, commented, "We are excited to announce that we have entered into an agreement to acquire select assets of the Sierra Wireless AirCard business. We expect this acquisition will accelerate the mobile initiative of our service provider business unit to become a global leader in providing the latest in LTE data networking access devices. We believe that LTE network technology represents a huge market opportunity, especially in emerging markets and rural areas where high speed broadband Internet access is currently limited. This asset acquisition reinforces NETGEAR's commitment to develop innovative products for the next generation of Internet service providers."

Christine Gorjanc, Chief Financial Officer of NETGEAR, said, "We are excited about the opportunities this transaction gives us, and we expect this acquisition to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings in the first full quarter that NETGEAR operates the AirCard business. Based on current information, the business we are acquiring has a 12 month trailing net revenue run rate of approximately $247 million through December 2012."

"We are also taking this opportunity to update NETGEAR's estimates for the recently completed fourth quarter of 2012," Ms. Gorjanc continued. "We currently expect to achieve net revenue of $305 million to $310 million and non-GAAP operating margin within the 11% to 11.5% range, both of which are within the guidance we provided last quarter for net revenue and non-GAAP operating margin, respectively. The non-GAAP tax rate for the fourth quarter of 2012 is currently expected to be approximately 40%, which is higher than the approximately 33% that we had previously estimated. We will provide all the details on our 2012 fourth quarter and year-end results in our normally scheduled earnings release in February."

With the completion of the asset acquisition, approximately 160 employees located primarily in Carlsbad, California and Richmond, British Columbia are expected to be integrated into NETGEAR's service provider business under Michael Clegg, Senior Vice President and General Manager of NETGEAR's service provider business unit.

SIERRA WIRELESS ENTERS INTO AGREEMENT TO SELL ASSETS OF AIRCARD(R) BUSINESS TO NETGEAR

Vancouver, Canada - January 28, 2013

Expected net cash proceeds of approximately $100 million USD

Transaction enables Sierra Wireless to accelerate growth of machine-to-machine (M2M) business

Company provides preliminary fourth quarter and full year 2012 financial highlights

(All amounts included are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise stated.) Sierra Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced it has executed a definitive agreement for the sale of substantially all of the assets and operations related to its AirCard(R) business to NETGEAR(R), Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR) for $138 million in cash plus approximately $6.5 million in assumed liabilities as of December 31, 2012. NETGEAR is a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses, and service providers. Sierra Wireless expects to realize net cash proceeds of approximately $100 million from the asset sale, after related taxes, expenses, and funds held in escrow. The transaction is expected to close in March 2013, subject to customary closing conditions.

Under the transaction, NETGEAR will acquire the assets and operations of the AirCard business, including customer relationships, products, intellectual property, inventory, and fixed assets, and assume certain liabilities, including warranty commitments and other customer obligations. Approximately 160 employees, primarily in sales, marketing, and R&D, will be transferred to NETGEAR, as well as certain facilities in Carlsbad, CA and Richmond, BC.

"This transaction is the next step in our transformation into a company focused on enabling the 'Internet of Things' - a strategy we have been pursuing with great success since 2007," said Jason Cohenour, President and CEO of Sierra Wireless. "We are the world leader in this dynamic market, with the industry's broadest product lineup, solutions across the value chain and an extensive, blue-chip customer base. In addition to realizing a solid return for the AirCard business, this transaction will provide significant financial resources and capacity to accelerate our growth in M2M and connected device solutions."

Mr. Cohenour added, "Our AirCard business has become the technology leader in the mobile broadband market, and has earned a global reputation for strong R&D execution and high quality products. The acquisition by NETGEAR offers this product line and superb team a natural home and excellent growth prospects, as the strategy, product line and channel alignment is very strong. Under the ownership of NETGEAR, our AirCard customers can expect continued high service levels and technology innovation."

Upon completion of the transaction, Sierra Wireless's retained business will include its AirPrime[TM] embedded modules for M2M and Mobile Computing, AirLink(R) intelligent gateways and routers, and AirVantage[TM] M2M cloud product lines. Going forward, Sierra Wireless will be an M2M and connected device pure play company, focused on providing innovative hardware, software, and cloud-based solutions that work together to enable customers across a broad range of markets to connect their machines to the "Internet of Things."

Use of funds

Sierra Wireless intends to use net proceeds from the transaction to continue its acquisition strategy in the M2M market, with the objective of accelerating revenue and earnings growth by strengthening its leadership in existing markets and expanding its position in the M2M value chain.

Sierra Wireless is also exploring alternatives to return a portion of the proceeds to shareholders and will seek approval of the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TSX") to undertake a normal course issuer bid ("NCIB"). The terms of the proposed NCIB will be subject to TSX review and approval, and Sierra Wireless expects to provide further details in the coming weeks.

Financial highlights for the fourth quarter and full year 2012

Sierra Wireless expects consolidated fourth quarter 2012 results to be solidly in line with guidance provided on November 1, 2012. Preliminary revenue for the full year is $644 million.

With respect to the retained business, preliminary fourth quarter and full year 2012 revenues were $109 and $397 million, respectively, including $14.0 million and $61.1 million, respectively, in revenue from the sale of AirPrime embedded wireless modules to Mobile Computing customers. Non-GAAP gross margin for the retained business was 33.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012 and 31.6 percent for the full year. Non-GAAP earnings from operations for the retained business were modestly positive in the fourth quarter, showing a steady improvement throughout the year.

"Upon closing this transaction, we will be highly focused on driving profitable revenue growth in our M2M business," said David McLennan, Chief Financial Officer of Sierra Wireless. "As a stand-alone business, we will have a cost structure that supports considerably higher revenue levels, which will initially be reflected in modest operating margins. However, because we will be fully invested for growth, as we increase our revenues we expect to see greater operating leverage from the business."

Sierra Wireless will release fourth quarter and fiscal 2012 financial results after market close on February 6, 2013. Management will provide additional financial detail at that time.

BMO Capital Markets is acting as exclusive financial advisor to Sierra Wireless, and Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP and Paul Hastings LLP are acting as legal counsel to Sierra Wireless.

Timeline of Germany's Greens

(Reuters) - Formed in 1980 as a loose coalition of pacifists, socialists environmentalists and feminists, the Greens may become kingmakers after Germany's September 2013 federal election.

Here is a look at significant Greens moments in Germany:

October 1992 - Germany's Greens co-founder Petra Kelly is found dead. Kelly was one of its first members of parliament. She was shot dead by her partner, former general and Green politician Gert Bastian, who then killed himself.

Sept/Oct 1998 - Social Democrats under Gerhard Schroeder win the federal election. Schroeder seals a coalition with the Greens and names Greens leader, Joschka Fischer, as foreign minister and deputy chancellor. The Greens join the federal government for first time.

May 1999 - The Greens emerge strengthened from a turbulent party congress where pacifists' anti-NATO demands are defeated. Party leaders and analysts say the Greens had come of age by beating back left-wing demands for an immediate halt to NATO's Yugoslav bombing campaign.

November 2001 - The Greens vote by a large majority to back the deployment of troops in Afghanistan, averting the collapse of the coalition government. Parliament approves the motion the next month.

September 2002 - Fischer confirms his status as Germany's most popular politician as he leads his Greens to their best election result.

March 2003 - Fischer, addressing the U.N. Security Council, says it is still possible to disarm Iraq peacefully and that Berlin therefore rejects war on Baghdad.

November 2005 - Angela Merkel's new coalition government of conservatives and Social Democrats (SPD) takes office after defeating Schroeder's SPD-Greens alliance in elections.

June/July 2011 - Lawmakers in the lower house of parliament - with opposition members from the Greens and SPD joining Merkel's center-right coalition - approve an end to nuclear energy by 2022 following Japan's Fukushima disaster. The upper house votes for it a week later.

March 2012 - Following elections in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, the Green Party heads its first-ever state government, ending 58 years of rule by the conservative CDU. Later in the year Greens candidate Fritz Kuhn becomes mayor of Stuttgart, the first German state capital to elect a Green mayor.

January 2013 - The Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens edge Merkel's conservatives from power in Lower Saxony by one seat, reviving its hopes of defeating her in the September 2013 election.

Being The Best You Possible With Self Improvement - ProjectPB ...

Stepping on the path toward personal development will make you feel great and confident about your life. To achieve your goals, you must draw on different sources of inspiration and motivation. You will find many great tips that will help you out.

A great self help tip to deal with anxiety is to accompany a friend to the movies. This is a good way to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You can be social with your friend before and after the movie and will have to be around strangers, but you won?t have to be overly social and can recharge during the movie. Eventually, it will be second nature to be around a large amount of people.

Create a fund specifically for emergencies. Many people think that a credit card counts as an emergency fund. Putting back a few dollars weekly can build an emergency fund quickly. This fund can be crucial in both your immediate and distant future as you work toward decreasing debt, rather than accumulating it.

TIP! Always have the attitude that you are worth it when working on your personal development plan. Always remember that you owe yourself your best effort.

Instead of talking about your accomplishments, ask some other people about some of the things they have accomplished and what they are most proud of. You can learn a lot about others from this, and have an opportunity to learn about things other people have done that warrant respect and admiration.

Focus on changing just one thing about yourself at any given time. You may wish to improve several different things about yourself, but you are more likely to succeed if you stick to one self-improvement project at a time. By slowly introducing things one at a time, it is much easier to stick with these personality changes in the long-term.

Ease your worries. Worrying is creating a situation in your head that has not happened, and in most cases, will not happen. Put your worries aside by imagining the very worst thing that could happen and developing a plan on how to deal with that situation, should it occur. Doing so will allow you to feel ready for what may come.

TIP! Are you having trouble finding a mate? Perhaps you should try the Internet. These days, 40 percent of couples meet via the Internet.

A necessary component of self improvement is an understanding of your life?s ambition. You need to set some goals for the long haul; they can put things into perspective.

If you want to enhance your approach to self improvement, learn to be humble. As you acknowledge that you are small and insignificant in this universe, the more that you realize your lack of knowledge. A humble attitude puts you in the right mindset to learn new things and develop as a human being.

If you are not able to deal with your own life, you cannot help the ones around you. Whether you?re just starting your personal development plan or are well down the road and regardless of whether you?re succeeding or failing, you have to set aside time for yourself to rest, relax, and regroup.

TIP! If you want to improve, write your goals down. For example, if you wish to become more confident in your life, write that down.

Always try do do the best you can at whatever you do. Your drive should lead the way on the path to success. Do not worry if you are not the best at what you do: the important part is to enjoy it and inspire others. Try to boost your worth in your field of work, and enjoy the benefits your self-esteem will get from it.

Your mental health can be directly influenced by the physical heath of your body. Develop a regular fitness routine and follow a nutritious, satisfying diet plan. If you want a healthy mind, make sure it resides in a healthy body.

Always retain your sense of humility. In the cosmic overview, humans are just a small blip. No single individual is omniscient, yet each individual possesses some grain of unique and valuable knowledge. Remember this and stay open for new chances to learn. Keep an open mind and you will always find new things others can teach you.

TIP! Ego and self esteem can suffer as a result of failure when one is striving to make strides in the area of personal development. Failure is just a learning experience incognito.

Try to live your life with your faith and love reflected in your actions. They stem from one another; you must have love to have faith. Thus, it is important to always act on your faith and show your love. Do good deeds for those who need it, and make your faith actually mean something by loving yourself and your peers.

Finding ways to live a healthier life will also help you in your self improvement endeavors. People feel better physically and mentally when in the best shape. When you radiate health you are feeling strong and mentally alert. You will spend less time on health issues and more time enjoying your life. Make better choices, dedicate yourself to it.

None of us can say that we haven?t made mistakes from time to time. One of the biggest mistakes that we often choose to ignore is our choice in foods. Admit your poor choices, and move on with your life.

TIP! If you experience anxiety in social situations, ask a friend to join you at the movie theater. This allows you to be in a social setting without the added pressure of talking to a lot of people.

Focus on making your time spent working as productive as possible. The best way to do that is to take breaks more often. This might seem counterproductive, but having constant breaks will help you recharge and unwind, so that you will get a lot more things done when you go back to working.

Even if you use just one of the preceding tips, you will definitely see improvement in your life. Sometimes you will need to be working hard, but you can do this knowing you have been given some great advice that will help you along.

Whatever you might think you need in life, remember that nothing takes place without action. Choose to take real action, everyday, towards your goals and dreams, instead of just watching others from the sidelines. Being alive means learning, exploring, and forever enhancing your own personal development.

TIP! Learn to recognize which obstacles are keeping you away from your goals. Most people don?t know where to start.

Try to stay as comprehensive as possible when learning about Self Improvement. This is why it was important to research this article and get all the information you can about Self Improvement. This will help to facilitate the learning process with Self Improvement.

Economists growing more upbeat about year ahead

NEW YORK (AP) ? Economists are increasingly, but still cautiously, optimistic about growth in the year ahead with the hiring expected to pick up in coming months.

A quarterly survey by the National Association for Business Economists released Monday shows half of the economists polled now expect real gross domestic product ? the value of all goods and services produced in the United States ? to grow between 2 and 4 percent in 2013. That's up from 36 percent of respondents who felt the same way three months earlier.

About half expect sluggish or negative performance, down from 65 percent in October.

The latest survey was conducted between Dec. 20 and Jan. 8 and asked 65 economists and others who use economics in the workplace about conditions at their firms or industries. It found that 34 percent of firms now expect to expand their payrolls in the next six months, the highest percentage since April of last year. Meanwhile, 2 percent said they expect their companies to cut payrolls through layoffs, while 14 percent see payrolls trimmed through attrition.

A quarter of respondents also said employment grew at their firms in the fourth quarter, which is comparable to the levels seen in the first half of 2012. The same percentage also reported a rise in wages at their firms in the final three months of the year, up 10 percentage points from the last survey.

Overall sales growth was stable in the fourth quarter with results mixed across industries. For instance, growth slowed in the services, finance, insurance and real estate sectors, but rose in the transportation, utilities, information and communications sectors.

Timothy Gill, chair of NABE's survey committee and director of economics at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, noted that sales growth was stable despite "widespread uncertainty surrounding the potential impact of the fiscal cliff."

The "fiscal cliff" refers to the steep tax hikes and spending cuts that were to take effect Jan. 1 unless the White House and Congress reached an agreement to avoid them. The survey found that 27 percent of respondents postponed at least some hiring and capital spending during the quarter as a result, while 72 percent said the issue didn't affect hiring.

Despite stable sales growth, survey respondents noted that profit margins deteriorated in the fourth quarter, with 25 percent saying their margins increased, down from 27 percent in October. On the flipside, 18 percent reported declining profit margins, compared with 15 percent a year ago. Over the next three months slightly more than a third said they expect primary non-labor costs to rise. That's down from 43 percent in the previous survey.

Expectations for capital spending over the next year weakened from the last survey. Only 40 percent expect their firms to grow capital spending, down from 52 percent.

For consumers, the survey suggests modest inflation could be in the works, with two-fifths of respondents ? the highest share over the past year ? saying they expect prices to rise in coming months. Most of those expecting hike prices think the increases will be less than 5 percent.

(AP) ? Zac Brown hasn't put together the set list for his Daytona 500 kickoff concert next month, but he's got a pretty good idea of how it will go.

"It would have to be up-tempo, rockin'," Brown said, "... tryin' to get everybody pumped up for the race."

It's a pedal to the metal kind of time for the group over the next month.

First up: the Grammy Awards, where the band is up for country album of the year on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.

Brown said band members are excited about a return to the show, where they won best new artist in 2010.

"It's the awards show. It is the one," Brown said. "The other ones, there's a lot of politics, in my opinion. This one is legitimately chosen by your peers as an artist. I think you're judged by your music at the Grammys."

Then it's on to Florida for the Feb. 24 Daytona 500, NASCAR's season-opening race. The seven-piece band will play a miniconcert during the Budweiser Pre-Race Show, with two songs aired live.

Like the Grammys, it's a milestone moment for the band. And not just musically. Brown grew up in Georgia where the Daytona 500 is as big as the Super Bowl. Maybe bigger.

"It was always the big sporting event," Brown said. "Anytime there was major championships or major races, they were usually on TV. They were usually a part of what was going on when we were all hanging out together."
