A history lesson that?ll have you at the edge of your seat, ?Argo? starts off at a flying pace and seldom loses steam. It is smart, often funny and has a terrific nail-biting climax with a hurrah finish.
What?s it about?
During the 1979 siege of the American embassy in Iran, six employees escape and are taken in by Canadian diplomats. An elaborate plan is hatched by the CIA to rescue the six and is headed by exfiltration expert Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck). To facilitate their safe exit, Mendez floats a bogus film production company with Hollywood makeup man John Chambers (John Goodman) and producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin) and announces that they are making a movie ?Argo?, which will be set in the Middle East. He flies to Iran as a Canadian citizen, seeks permission to scout for filming locations and creates false Canadian identities for the Americans to have them pose as his crew.
Affleck puts in a good enough performance, but he isn?t the brightest star in the cast. Jostling for the top spot are Arkin (his retort to a producer is sure to draw claps and even whistles from the audience) and Goodman, who work wonderfully together and provide some light moments in an otherwise intense film. The tiny flourishes also don?t go unnoticed. Some of the more obvious throwbacks to the seventies are the handlebar moustaches and Lennon sunglasses, but as soon as the opening credits begin and you?re greeted by the old Warner Bros logo the company used during the period, you know this film has been made with a lot of attention to detail.
